WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his administration is contacting Dina Powell, his former senior advisor, on a possible replacement of outgoing Nikki Haley as new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, while not ruling out other people for the post.

Trump told reporters at the White House that Powell, his former deputy national security adviser, is "somebody we're talking to," when asked if she was the top candidate to succeed Haley, who announced her resignation on Tuesday.

Trump added that the White House is "looking at many people," including some who are currently working in the administration.

On Tuesday, Trump revealed that he had already had a five-person short list for the post. He was expected to name the new UN envoy within two or three weeks' time.

Trump accepted Haley's resignation on Tuesday, who will remain in the post until the end of the year.

Powell returned to work in Goldman Sachs as a senior executive after leaving her White House job earlier this year. She once served in the George W. Bush administration.
