RIGA, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Polling stations opened across Latvia on Wednesday afternoon as early voting in this year's European Parliament began in the Baltic country, the national election authority informed.

Early voting will be taking place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, while Saturday will be the official day of European Parliament election in Latvia when polling stations will remain open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Latvia will elect eight out of the EU legislature's 751 members who will be in office from 2019 to 2024.

A public opinion poll conducted in May by Berg Research has put Latvia's ruling center-right New Unity on top of the polls with 18.37 percent voter support, followed by the opposition left-wing Harmony with 17.03 percent and the ruling rightist National Alliance with 15.36 percent.

Other political parties likely to win representation in the European Parliament include the ruling liberal alliance For Development/For, supported by 9.94 percent of voters, the Alliance of Regions with 7.86 percent and the Latvian Union of Russians with 7.38 percent of voter support.
