MOSCOW, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The Russian navy will get new submarines and surface ships this year within its re-equipment program, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday.

Two nuclear and one diesel submarines will be commissioned, Shoigu said at a conference call with top armed forces officials, according to a Defense Ministry statement.

The surface forces will receive a frigate, a corvette, a large landing ship, two small missile ships, a patrol ship, a minesweeper, five combat boats and 20 support vessels.

He said 11 ships will undergo repairs this year.

Under the Fundamentals of Russia's State Naval Policy Through 2030 approved by President Vladimir Putin in 2017, Russia aims to build its navy into the world's second in terms of combat capabilities.
