ATHENS, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Katrougalos met here on Tuesday with Jane Holl Lute, the United Nations' special envoy for Cyprus.

No statements were made to the press. Citing diplomatic sources, the Greek national news agency AMNA reported that Katrougalos stressed "Greece's firm position for the solution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN resolutions for the reunification of the island, an ending of the unacceptable regime of guarantees and the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops."

Lute's visit came amid efforts for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, which were interrupted in the summer of 2017.

Earlier this month, the UN envoy held talks with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. After Athens, she will travel to Turkey to wrap up the latest round of contacts with the two sides on the island and the so-called guarantor forces.

Cyprus was partitioned when Turkey occupied its northern part in a 1974 military operation, in response to a coup organized by the military rulers of Greece at the time.

Numerous efforts to reach an agreement on the reunification of Cyprus have so far ended inconclusively.
