VALLETTA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Maltese government and the British High Commission in Malta signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery on Wednesday.

According to the MOU, Britain will offer training to Malta's public employees that work with vulnerable persons who are at risk of being trafficked.

Britain will also help Malta for the framework of a National Strategy Against Human Trafficking, as well as the structuring of new legislation in this sphere.

Malta's Parliamentary Secretary for Reform, Julia Farrugia Portelli said that Malta will launch an educational campaign to raise public awareness regarding human trafficking and its implications in 2019.

"The valuable assistance of our British counterparts will result in a comprehensive victim-centred approach against human trafficking," she said.

Stuart Gill, British High Commissioner to Malta, said that close cooperation between all countries is necessary because human trafficking involves 40 million people around the world.

The MOU will last for two years.
