DAMASCUS, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- People in the Rukban refugee camp in southeastern Syria face tough conditions with lack of food and medical materials, a war monitor reported on Wednesday.

The camp, which is located near the Iraqi-Jordanian border, is also facing tough weather as a sandstorm has recently hit that desert area, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The area where the camp is located is controlled by rebel group Liwa Shuhada al-Qaryatayn, which was supposed to evacuate to northern Syria in accordance with a Russian-backed deal but it didn't.

The UK-based watchdog group said that the tough situation is coupled with a closed border by Jordan.

The camp has been attacked previously by the Islamic State (IS) more than once.

Meanwhile, the UN office in Damascus said in a statement that "preparations are actively ongoing for a joint UN and Syrian Red Arab Crescent (SARC) convoy next week to provide humanitarian assistance to an estimated 50,000 women, children and men who are stranded at the Rukban camp."

"The overall humanitarian situation inside the Rukban camp is at a critical stage. The UN in Syria together with SARC, will reach the camp to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance in the coming few days," the statement quoted the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator Ali Al-Za'tari as saying.

The UN is in close coordination with all parties concerned to ensure a safe and quick delivery of aid, the statement added, noting that the last delivery of UN aid to Rukban took place in January 2018 through Jordan.
