BEIRUT, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese citizens are expected to experience increased power cuts with only 6 to 7 hours of electricity daily in the coming three months, local media reported on Wednesday.

The country's electricity company Electricite du Liban (EDL) said that the power cuts were dut to lack of funds.

"EDL did not get enough funds from the Finance Ministry in 2018 budget for proper power generation throughout the year," Elnashra, an independent online newspaper quoted a source at EDL as saying.

EDL added that funds for Turkish power barges in the country are secured only till the end of this month. If the 2019 budget did not give enough funds to the company next year, people can only enjoy 6 to 7 hours of daily electricity.

Power generation by EDL stands at 12 hours daily now.

Lack of electricity in Lebanon has been a problem for many years, with the government being incapable of generating the needed amount of power.

According to Lebanese Energy Minister Cesar Abi Khalil, there was a plan to build two power stations in Selaata and Zahrani but the government could not raise sufficient funds to complete the projects.

The current public electricity production in Lebanon stands at 2,000 MW, while national demand goes beyond 3,300 MW in summer months.
