SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A paramilitary trooper was killed and another wounded Tuesday after militants attacked them in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The paramilitary troopers belonging to India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were attacked in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today militants fired upon a CRPF party near Batmaloo here, during which two CRPF personnel were wounded," a senior police official posted in Srinagar told Xinhua. "Though the wounded were immediately removed to hospital, one of them succumbed to his wounds there."

According to police, the area was immediately cordoned off following the attack, however reports said militants managed to flee from the spot.

The region's indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
