NEW YORK, June 24 (Xinhua) -- NASA has recently unveiled an eye-catching image of a blue-shaded dune on the red planet Mars.

The snap, captured by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Jan. 24, 2018, shows an accumulation of crescent-shaped sand dunes in the region of Lyot Crater, NASA said in a statement earlier this week.

Just to the south of the group of dunes lies a large dune with a stranger and more complex structure, which makes it strikingly blue, or in NASA's words, "turquoise blue in enhanced color."

The U.S. space agency added that the particular dune "is made of finer material and/or has a different composition than the surrounding."

Mars is currently experiencing a massive dust storm, which threatens NASA's Martian operations.

NASA's Opportunity rover, which has been on Mars for nearly 15 years, is going into sleep mode. However, the Curiosity rover has not been affected yet, according to a Fox News report.
