JAKARTA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- 4's Keramas Beach in Bali hosted an international surfing championship, designated as part of top five world's series, which is coupled with a campaign program to stop plastic pollution in the sea.

"This event would contend 11 series of competitions, participated by world's best surfers consisted of 34 men and 18 women," Tipi Jabrik, secretary general of Indonesian Surfers Association, said on Bali's Keramas Beach on Sunday.

The surfing championship, now called Bali Protected, was a resumption of the Bali Pro series which was last held in 2013, he said.

The championship, which should be an annual event, was now resumed after obtained a credible sponsor to run the event, Jabrik said.

"Being endorsed by domestic related stakeholders, including the tourism ministry, provincial and regency tourism offices, the current championship was mainly sponsored by a foreign firm," he was quoted as saying by state-run media Antara.

The waves in Keramas Beach are considered quite challenging for the surfers and Bali was believed to have international-standard accommodations and facilities to host the international surfing events, he added.

The surfing championship and related campaign events related to anti-marine plastic pollution programs initiated by the sponsor would run from May 27 to June 9.

The programs would be participated by local activists, NGOs, government authorities, local industries and consumers of branded packaged goods. A five-year action plan to address marine plastic pollution was expected to be presented in October in Bali.
