AU, US exchange views on ways of further enhancing partnership

ADDIS ABABA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) and the United States have exchanged views on ways and means to further enhance the partnership between the two sides.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday had a telephone conversation, whereby the two officials took the opportunity to talk over a number of issues, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc on Saturday.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission has invited Secretary Pompeo to visit the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa on the occasion of the next AU-U.S. Strategic Dialogue.

The Chairperson and the Secretary of State have exchanged views on issues, including the African Continental Free Trade Area and the promotion of peace and security on the African continent.

The Secretary of State reiterated the U.S. continued support to AU's efforts to advance integration and address conflict and crisis situations on the continent, as well as to the ongoing institutional reform process of the Union, according to the statement.?
