Zimbabwe consulting on rejoining Commonwealth: foreign minister

HARARE, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean foreign minister Sibusiso Moyo said consultations are at an advanced stage on the country rejoining the Commonwealth, a grouping of mostly former British colonies.

The country left the group in 2003 following disputes over its governance, including its land reform program to expropriate land from white farmers to parcel out to landless blacks.

State media The Herald reported Thursday that Moyo had told Parliament that the new administration led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa was not facing any impediments with regards to it rejoining the Commonwealth.

"In fact the process which is there at the moment is that there are necessary processes and consultations which are taking place." Moyo said.

He said these consultations would inform the executive so that the process of rejoining the Commonwealth could then be undertaken.
