RAMALLAH, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian senior official said Tuesday that President Mahmoud Abbas will present a peace initiative to the Security Council (UNSC).

Abbas will present "a Palestinian peace initiative as part of a Palestinian diplomatic attack, after U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as 's capital and the series of Israeli legislations and measures against Palestinians," said Riad Malki, the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

He made the remarks in a statement to official Palestinian radio station Voice of .

The initiative will call for "an international conference to overlook preparations for peace talks based on the two-state solution," Malki noted.

The Palestinians hope to establish an independent state along the borders of 1967 with East Jurusalem as its capital, while Israel claimed the whole Juerusalem as its eternal capital.

Abbas is expected to address the UNSC in New York on Tuesday for the first time in nine years. The speech comes at the invitation of current Security Council chair Kuwait.

The last round of U.S.-sponsored negotiations between Palestine and Israel broke down in 2014 after nine months of talks without any breakthrough.

On Dec. 6, 2017, Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordered the U.S. State Department to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
