Afghan army defuses massive bombs, finds 2 caches of weapons

KABUL, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel found 76 improvised bombs and landmines within the last 24 hours, the country's Defense Ministry said Monday.

"The ANA's explosive-ordnance disposal teams recovered 76 rounds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and roadside bombs elsewhere since early Sunday. They safely defused or destroyed the explosives over the period," the ministry tweeted.

The army soldiers also found two large caches of dangerous weapons in Ahmad Khil district of eastern Paktia province on Sunday.

Containing many different ammunition and weapons, the uncovered depots belonged to Gul Noor, a notorious commander of Haqqani network, the ministry noted.

The army personnel have established a cordon to keep secure the scenes where the weapons caches were located before transporting the ammunition.

As a Taliban-linked group of militants, the Haqqani network was designated as terrorist group by the in 2012.

The national army remains committed to secure communities and works diligently to provide security for Afghans across the country, the ministry noted.
