NEW DELHI, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least four women were killed and one critically injured Friday after being run over by a moving train in India's eastern state of Bihar, officials said.

The women were crushed on railway tracks near Kachari station in Siwan district, about 134 km northwest of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

"Today five women were crushed by a train while they were walking over the tracks for a crossover to other side to catch train. Four died on spot, while as one was critically injured," a senior local government official said. "The victims were said to be local residents from Gopalganj area."

Reports said following the accident, the injured woman was immediately taken to a hospital from where she was referred to Patna for specialised treatment.

The Indian government in 2015 announced an investment of more than 137 billion U.S. dollars over a period of five years to boost railways and modernize it on new lines.

Indian sprawling railways are the world's third largest network, ferrying around 23 million people each day.
