HOUSTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Governor of Texas Greg Abbott on Monday ordered the State Operations Center (SOC) to elevate its readiness level for coping with the expected weather conditions.

The readiness level will raise from Level 4 (Normal Conditions) to Level 3 (Increased Readiness) as winter weather and cold temperatures are expected to impact much of the southern U.S. state during the next few days.

Additionally, the governor has made available any state resources needed to assist in dealing with the potential impacts of the upcoming weather conditions. Abbott also encouraged Texans to monitor changing weather conditions and heed warnings from local authorities.

"The winter weather system sweeping across our state will bring low temperatures and freezing precipitation to many communities, which could create life-threatening situations," said Abbott.

"I urge all Texans to exercise extreme caution in these hazardous conditions. Additionally, the State of Texas will provide any and all state resources necessary to help protect our residents during this weather event," he added.

According to weather forecasts, many parts of Texas expect wintry precipitation this week. Schools in the Houston area will mostly be closed Tuesday. Texans are urged to avoid unnecessary travels when sleet, freezing rain or snow is predicted.
